What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies are situations requiring immediate attention to address severe tooth pain, broken or knocked-out teeth, bleeding from the gums, infected or abscessed teeth, or soft tissue injury. If you experience a dental emergency, contact our Buffalo Grove practice immediately. We are happy to offer same-day appointments to address your concerns as soon as possible.

If your emergency occurs outside of our office hours, please call our office for guidance. We offer concierge care during nights and weekends for an added fee, ensuring you have access to prompt care and relief when you need it most.

Note: If you or a loved one experiences severe facial swelling, uncontrollable bleeding, or a life-threatening emergency, please dial 911 immediately or head to your nearest hospital emergency room.

Tips on Caring for Common Dental Emergencies

Here are some tips on caring for common dental emergencies until you get seen by our emergency dentist:

  • Severe Tooth Pain: Sudden, persistent, or severe pain is a dental emergency requiring immediate care. After calling our office, use a piece of dental floss to ensure no debris lodged between your teeth is causing the discomfort. If that doesn’t help, take over-the-counter pain relief medication and use cold compresses to help reduce swelling.
  • An Infected or Abscessed Tooth: A tooth infection can be a serious matter that can pose a risk to your health. Use cold compresses and pain relief medication to help reduce discomfort or swelling, and contact us immediately.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: If a permanent tooth is knocked out, try to return it to its socket without touching its root. Otherwise, place it in a container of milk or saliva to keep it moist. A knocked-out tooth is a time-sensitive emergency requiring immediate care.
  • Broken or Chipped Tooth: Rinse your mouth gently with water to wash out any debris, and use cold compresses to reduce swelling. Contact our office for immediate care.
  • Soft-Tissue Injury: Injury of the gums, tongue, or cheeks can result from trauma. Place gentle pressure to control bleeding and use cold compresses to relieve any swelling. If the bleeding cannot be controlled, call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room.
